The Games are the Same. Covering Them Isn’t.


Professional sports leagues have returned, each in its unusual arrangement to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. That means reporters are back to covering live competition. The work is not quite the same: In-person contact with athletes is limited, or eliminated altogether. But the mission — to relay what happened, and what it felt like, to the people who weren’t there — might be even more important now while fans can’t attend. Here are a few Times sportswriters on what it’s been like getting back in the game, and what they’re missing under the new restrictions.
